We made a special effort today, getting out of bed at 7am, the mornings are still chilly. We catch the 8.18 bus into the city, not much is open or happening in there at 9.30am so we get the tram out to Mosely Square, Glenelg. This is a great little spot by Holdfast Bay. We take a stroll around then a look at the Bay Discovery Centre. It is Adelaide Cup day today, so plenty of people about in their race gear – we enjoy sitting in the pub watching the crowds go by, it gets busier as the day gets on.

Tram at the end of the line, ready for return trip to city |
At the discovery centre we learn all about the adventures of a young Aussie aviator, Jimmy Melrose – amongst his achievements in his short career, he participated in the first air race from London to Melbourne back in the 1930’s – he was the youngest participant, the only Australian to complete the journey and the only pilot to flight unaccompanied. Unfortunately poor Jimmy was killed instantly at the age of 22 when his plane crashed on a routine flight from Adelaide to Melbourne…..a fitting dedication to him at this centre.

North Terrace, so many buildings......can't remember what this one is |
We jump the tram back to town. We got a day ticket which covers, bus, tram and train travel, public transport is the way to go, no stress on driving, navigating and parking….. Back in town, we take a stroll down North Terrace where the streets are lined with a lot of historical buildings, including government house, the Adelaide University, churches and the Museum.

My Darl decided to go look at the museum and I keep walking the streets, happily snapping away. Met back up at the museum, I had a quick squizz through and what I saw was pretty impressive, admission by gold coin donation. Lots of entertainment happening in the mall today and with the Fringe festival on. We asked someone where there was a pub, down Hindley Street, off we go – it’s a 5-10 minute walk, we soon realise we are smack bang in the middle of red light district!

A 3D footpath painting, not bad hey.... |
My mate, comedian - Roy "Mo" Rene - most popular in his day, some of his famous catch phrases still used today by a lot of Aussies:-
Strike me Lucky
Fair suck of the Sav
Don't come the raw prawn with me
You Beaut
The Australian Entertainment Industry annual "Mo Award" for excellance in live performance is named after him.

This is "The Little PUB Just of Hindley Street" - closed today |
But that didn’t deter us. Found a couple bars to have a drink at - the Woolshed and the Rosemont - Rosemont sports bar 21 screens going with golf, AFL, soccer, rugby, horse, trot, dog racing - a bit confusing which to look at! It’s after 6 so we decide best go catch the bus back to Mt Barker. Finished off with a drink at the local Grays Inn, Darl said he'd shout me tea, went to order, meals are off, it's 8pm - bugger day light saving. Back home for soup!
