Thursday 4th August, WE DID IT!!! On the Suzi, over corros (15/10 yep off the ricter scale even on the bike, no pics I was too busy hanging on), one muddy deep creek crossing, Mel said he would walk through first, I wasn't keen for that, the croc thing n all, however we managed to skirt around it, through the bush, fantastic! The tip was extremely windy, we met a couple chaps there so had a bit of a photo shoot as you do. We walked up via the west coast along the beach and back along the middle track.
Some good advice from George, it's good luck to take some water from the Gulf of Carpentaria and release into the Torres Strait waters at the top, where East meets West etc.. Mel did the honours, I collected the water when we were in Weipa, think I told you that story too, so won't repeat. We spent a couple hours here, won't be getting back in a hurry so we enjoyed the moment.
Sorry if we bore you with all these photos of the TIP, but this is quite a momentus occasion for us, all this way to the most Northern tip of Australia, through hundreds dips, billions of corrugations, many dusty hair days (that's when we look at each other and laugh cause our hair is that stiff with dust it's standing to attention..), a number of pot holes, wash outs and dug outs and contending with numerous crazy 4wd doods at 100kms+/hr on the tracks (sounds like my little possum), WE MADE IT! As you can tell, we are pretty stoked.
East Coast of Queensland
West coast of Queensland, can't think of anywhere else where you can stand in the middle and do that..... not rubbing it in or anything.
Something we weren't expecting was to see the numerous piles of rocks, this was one of the huge ones, there were numerous of varying sizes all over the tip, just goes to show just how many people come to visit this beautiful, remote spot of Australia. We were happy to make the tip when we did, besides the other friendly two chaps, it was just us, as we were leaving there was a bit of an invasion of grey nomads.
Check this, this is what riding over thousands of 15/10 corros does to your lunch. Well I just picked each sanga up and stuck it back together as you do, packed one beer to keep the sangas cold, wasn't really thinking about packing drinks to celebrate, so we shared some smashed sangas and one beer for lunch at the TIP.
We set off from the tip, not far along the track, I noticed my left foot was wet, looked down and saw some water like spray, that was strange, looked at the bag my darl was carrying with the water, no leaks, uho, darl! darl! we've sprung a leak of some kind. Pulled over, yep the fuel tap hose popped out, fuel leaking all over, oh no this was 30 kms out from Bamaga, I didn't panic straight away, darl had fixed in no time, luckily! Ling saved the day this time.
Above photo quite cool if you can see in the rear view me taking the photo over my darl's shoulder, note the speedo, bout 20 miles/hr, this stretch of road is excellent, though narrow and windy, NO CORROS!! Why can't it be like this all the way back to Lakeland??? In ya dreams.....
One last pic for the day, my Darl outside the Croc Tent (Info centre, souvenirs, etc.) half way point between Bamaga and the tip. At this point you can turn off 11kms to Punsand Bay, we have heard is a beautiful little spot, camp ground, bar etc. Not going there, think you need 4wd to get there few crossing etc. Funny enough the next 17 kms back to Bamaga that were so bad coming out wasn't that bad going back (9/10) hope it's like that when we start the trek back down to civilisation.
